The Best Fabric for Your Baby Costume

What do you do when you can’t find the perfect fabric for your baby costume?

You make it of course!

Although furry, shiny, and sparkly fabrics are very tempting, synthetic materials may itch or scratch baby’s skin, and they won’t want to stay in them. And you don’t want the baby to get freaked out over wearing something so unusual and irritating, right? If you are going to put the work to create an amazing costume, you want baby to be happy in it, to enjoy, to have fun, and to take beautiful pictures, smiling!

Truth is, simplest fabrics are the best! You can add bits of the fancy materials or other embellishments for details and highlights if you’d like but on your baby’s skin you want soft, flexible, and comfortable fabrics. Plain cotton jersey or cotton fleece like their everyday clothes and pajamas are my best bets for them to be happy in for a fun time and those great pictures you are wishing for.

That’s why when I was making my first baby costume and couldn’t find baby friendly fabric in colors and print I envisioned, I took it as an opportunity to make the costume even more unique by creating my own. I got the simplest 100% cotton t-shirt fabric I found at the store and used fabric paint to hand paint dots that mimic the texture of chameleon skin, an abstract and playful interpretation of it that is.

Yes, just dots! it can be that simple, a crafty way to make a plain fabric look great giving more detail and embellishment to your character. And so easy, anyone can do it!

Have fun with it :)
